Since 1866 the company has been renowned as an artificer of custom designs, executed in exotic materials, the company originally gained fame as Japan's premier maker of traditional "Bridal" furniture. These pieces were crafted from a rapidly regenerating hardwood plant, called Paulowina.

Wealthy parents of a baby girl would approach a crafter and request that paulownia be sown so that a magnificent trousseau might be made when the child reached marital age. When the trees were ready, the cases would be meticulously crafted, and ornamented with expressive veneers and beautiful inlays. When the daughter's wedding day arrived, the young woman and her new husband would be presented these gifts, with best wishes for their good fortune and happiness. It is not difficult to understand why such a tradition would foster the development of one of the finest furniture makers in the world. Please see our Mission Statement.
